Aye, still at it. Actually haven't been doing much with my van except driving it lately. I've been talking to the local garage about dropping another engine in next year, although so far I've not found the most suitable engine in terms of an easy switch.

Thinking I might get this engine rebuilt, change the pistons, bit of a rebore etc etc, see if I can squeeze just a little more power out of the original unit with some traditional tuning malarkey.

Hope all is well with you Rae. Hopefully catch up with yourself and Ann at a meet soon.

I really like the look of your wheels! are they a standard fit (as nothing is) or using pcd adapters?

They're just 14" 8 spoke Wellers. Got them for about £20 off ebay (I can't actually remember how much they were actually just now, but not much). They were in quite bad condition, very rusty, pitted, dinged etc. Took me a while to get them into useable condition but it was worth it because they were comparatively cheap for Bedford PCD wheels.

MOT time
--------

Ripley failed her MOT today. Brake light not working, horn not working (they said that last year though and it was... its just quite and I think they're all a bit deaf at the garage), emissions fail (which they said "is not really a problem" ??) and £300's worth of welding needed on a rear arch and sill. I don't know which one, I'm going back to have a look tomorrow. I fear it might be the rear passenger, which had to be patch welded at the last MOT, and if so then it basically means my van is being steadily eaten away by rust from the back passenger quarter outwards.

Probably going to cost me £500 all in, cost of MOT, cost of other bits, cost of welding, plus vat.

I pray the welding problem doesn't get any bigger when they start poking around to fix it. It could end up being the MOT that convinces me I can't afford to keep this van on the road any longer.

oh no - what a shame. I feel mine too will fail on the welding this year too and in the same places you are having trouble. Are you having to strip out the interior for them to weld what needs to be welded? I hope it's not too big a job - fingers crossed.

If by 'interior' you are referring to the rust and grime in the back of my van, then yes, some of that did get removed.

Got the van back, new MOT certificate. Lives to fight another day. £450 though all in, so there goes the fund for doing any improvements for another year. What with the radiator going in February and other sundry parts needed, its been a bloody expensive year so far.

I'm just glad the downpipe didn't have to be replaced. They gave it an advisory last year, but this year it appears to have self-healed.

glad to know you are still motoring - its my turn in 2 weeks time! Rust everywhere, but I have a week off before she is due so hopefully I can treat most of it before she goes in but I am expecting to need something done this year.

Thought of you today Alena... went for a blast up to Peas Pottage as I generally do, and when I got there, the car park was packed full of American muscle, gassers, street rods, rat rods, 30's pick ups and all sorts of American stuff... every decade from the 30's right up to modern day. I half expected your Iroc to pull in.

It was, I have to say, an amazing day. I had no idea there was a meet at all. There were a bunch of pro-street cars that shifted like nothing on earth. Incredible power. There was also a pro-street Hillman Husky that had the fattest rear wheels in the world tubbed underneath so the inside walls were literally about 3" apart.

Like an idiot, I joined the convoy back down to Brighton in my knackered old Beddie. They all must have thought I was a proper saddo to be joining in, but I just wanted to watch them all cruising along so I pulled my hat down low and tried not to look like I was trying to be part of the run hahahah.

I got home and decided I was going to invest in American metal. Might be the end of my Bedford if I do though.

There's a fantastic looking Camaro for sale in Shoreham on Sea. Don't suppose by any random chance you happen to know the owner of it do you?

I might go and have a look at it...

As for your MOT... Bets of luck with it. Do you know where you're having yours done? I took mine back to Portslade as per usual, but I'm wondering if I might look for another garage to look after Ripley now.

The bloke who works on my van has done so regularly for the last two years, but was off ill last year for a long time, and looks like a shadow of his former self now he's back. Not sure what was wrong with him, but I think its knocked him about a bit.

When my van was in for its MOT, he called me up at work, really agitated. He was angry because he couldn't open the bonnet, like it was my fault. I told him three times how to do it, and when I went back at the end of the day to collect it, he still hadn't been able to open it and was telling me the bonnet was stuck and the catch was broke. Still angry. I took him over and showed him how the catch worked. It was like he'd never seen it before. He must have done it himself a hundred times over the last two years.

After it had passed and I took it home, I discovered he'd unscrewed the back door handle from the inside and removed the bolts, leaving the handle hanging out of the holes by the two screws and pure chance. I know that handle was secured firmly with bolts because I did it myself and glued the bolts, using a handle I got off Adrian Bailey at great expense. He had clearly needed to get inside to do the welding, and my guess is he couldn't operate that handle either, even though it wasn't even locked, so he'd presumably climbed over the seats and unscrewed the handle from the inside.

So I need a new, good, local garage. Shame, because I really like them lot down there and generally feel I can trust them. Its like the bloke who does my van has gone a bit ... I don't know ... confused though.

Glad you liked the muscle run - they happen quite frequently. My car is in Horsham at the moment as I have Sparkys van on the front garden and Ive run out of room. I had planned on going but other car stuff meant i spent the day working on vehicles again!
As for the MOT, I get my cars (Metro and Maxi) done by a mates dad - he picks them up and brings them back too. He lives in Portslade which is handy. I can pass you details if you like, the MOT station is in Worthing. The van went to Postslade MOT last year but this year I am taking her to Billingshurst. I wasn't too impressed with the quality of the welding done nor the lack of knowledge on carb set up they had last year. They seem ok on Landrovers though, my dad goes there with his. The chap in Billingshurst knows 'old cars' and used to do my Marina.
I would strongly recommend thinking twice about an american car from the practicality point of view though. It does put a big smile on your face when driving (so does a Bedford), but its a bugger to park, it needs 3 lanes of the M25 to turn in and they really need a warm comfy garage to live in! Plus there is no where near the shopping capacity you get with a Bedford.
Its Beaulieu autojumble next weekend - I am are off down there with some mates to look for a multitude of spares for the collection n the sunday. Let me know if there is anything you need and Ill look out for it.

I've just realised which house is your dad's now - its the one with the Landies outside. Does he / do you know the Skoda man a few doors up? He used to have a lovely black Rapid coupe that I offered to buy off him a few times but he always said he'd never part with it, and then the next thing I knew - he'd parted with it.

Anyway, as for the MOT recommendation you have... yes please, I'd love to get the details of someone who can do it next year rather than Portslade.

As for American... yes, I guess I should take all that into account.

I might head along to Beaulieu too. Its on my calender of potential things to do if I get the time. I could do with quite a few bits. Will you be going there in your bedford or in your camaro? If its the Bedford, maybe we should travel down there in convoy if your mate Sparky is going in his too.

Decided it was time I tackled the two forwardmost side windows (one per side) on my van as the rubber seals (more like hard shiny plastic than rubber) were perished badly and leaking.

Last year I did the two rearmost ones and replaced the three piece glass camper windows with single piece acrylic and new seals. It was an absolute bugger to do though because I had to guess the actual (exact) size of the acrylic in order to have it cut to shape before removing the old stuff. Turned out I had mis-calculated and ended up having to shave the 5mm acrylic down using an old surform and a small block plane.

So for these two I decided to panel them over. I didn't want to drill the bodywork though, so I have created a snadwich of things that are all bolted at the very lip of the window aperture in the bodywork. I had to cut the work short because the bathroom decided to collapse requiring me to redeploy my time and DIY skills.

But I have done the protective metal outer sheet and the inner wood panel, with rubber panel gusseting in between the two. Its all sealed and painted very roughly over for weatherproofing.

At some point I need to grind down the boltheads, then I have a second outer skin of .5mm aluminium to stick over the whole thing with countersunk heads that can be filled over. I'll then fill the edge channels, skin all of that cosmetically with car adhesive vinyl and put the proper external paint on (by roller) and the job will look pretty much smooth and flawless (apart from the hand rollered paint which is a feature of my van anyhow).

The whole thing is reversible, so at any point I can cut it all out again and stick the glass back in with new seals and there's absolutely no change to the bodywork at all.

Bad picture taken with my phone, but here's one side... the ugly side of my van with the knackered panelling...

As of this evening I am the proud owner of an Essex V6 engine...

Now I have to figure out how to get it down here, and then I have to figure out how to get it into my van.

In the meantime I'm reading all the hysteria that's being kicked up about the possible EU ban on modified vehicles. Seems its been a storm in a tea-cup, although the sources who can claim its a storm in a tea-cup are only as reliable as the ones saying any modification will mean a failed MOT.

Info: Fleabay purchase. Engine, manifolds, ancilliaries, etc etc, bell housing and auto gear box.

All for £140.

I'm sure that for that kind of money the whole package works perfectly, like a dream... (----------------------

I wondered about that, but I don't think my van would make it. Its in quite a bad way lately. I doubt it could pull the weight of an extra engine. Also, I don't think I'd be able to find the time to do it ( or risk it) as I only have weekends available. I have taken a job in London and leave the house early/get back late, so if I put a weekend into fetching it back, I literally wouldn't see my kids for two whole weeks.

I don't think I could cope with that, those little tykes mean everything to me.

I tend to drive my van quite hard, truth be known. It goes quite well, because it blows freely out of the rusted-to-cr*p downpipe.

Lately, on deceleration, it has started to make a Zzzzzzzzzzzzrrrrrrr noise. If I'm slowing down at a junction, it zzzzrrrrrs consistently, and quite loudly, at the front, over towards the driver side front wheel.

It does the zzzzzzzzr noise even if I'm in neutral, even if I don't touch the brakes. So... I assume its neither the gears nor the brakes. I think it could be a failing wheelbearing. Would that check out do you lot reckon.

The only other thought I've had is that its actually a cable that's hanging and which, under deceleration, gets thrown forward onto a spinning part. The sound it like a plastic spoon pressed against a lathe, or a drill skitting steadily over a piece of plastic.

Anyway, that, plus the completely blown exhaust, plus the huge amount of heat coming out of my engine bay lately, tell me my van would NOT make it to Cumbria and back.

Nice one Tim. Will you be spinning the sump round (can you spin the sump round)? Just spent today grinding the old engine mountings off my spare cross member.
