I think it probably looks more like a shunt when I photograph down the side of the panel, but that's mainly because all the dents and buckles look close together like its a rear impact. When I went to view the van, the seller showed me the shots of it before he filled it and painted it. It was definitely rotted not crashed. Inside is absolutely straight. Floor plan is original and perfectly flat.

It had rotted in a long horizontal line as though water had settled there and been left for ages. Its got wood panelling on and apart from peering behind it I haven't taken it off fully, but I imagine there's possibly a horizontal structural piece across there that the water sat on. Either that or it had nasty scrape through a tight spot and was left untreated.

Anyway the previous owner patched it up using an old horse's leg to beat the panel back into shape. Unfortunately, the shape he beat it back into was a lunar landscape, not a bedford van.

I've been pondering my bodywork a lot today. It really is quite bad and I reckon come spring it will be worse. I may have to consider turning it into a rat rod instead. A shame, because I really wanted a faithful looking resto to drive round.

I'm a bit dis-heartened today. I suspect my van is already beyond the glory I had planned for it.

That's a cool looking van, worth the time needed definately. All you need is a front ended one to come up on flea bay and you are sorted!

Don't get disheartened Spooky - everything is fixable.....just look at MY blog!!!

Let's see what Philbut says about butchering his van near Bath....from memory there may be possibilities there

Just try to keep on top of things until after Christmas if you can, I can probably spare a weekend in January to help cut the panel off if we can arrange a mutually convenient time to meet...

Spookytim, don't be so sad. All will be good. I know. :-)
Wish you just clear brain! Ideas comes to head when brain is very clear and mind is quiet. ;-)

I should make it clear that when i say

"I've been pondering my bodywork a lot today. It really is quite bad and I reckon come spring it will be worse"

that i am talking about my body, not my van's.

Yeah you're right. It'll all come good.

If anyone has time to read point 2 below, I'd be interested in any thoughts on it...

1. Fuel and redex
I put a higher octane fuel into Bedlam's tank yesterday after reading on here that it can make a big difference (always thought that was really just for performance heads who run hi-tech engines) and also put some redex in the tank. Took it for a really long blast up the A27 this morning as well as some traffic driving, and I have to say it seems to have made a lot of difference. Much smoother acceleration, less grouchy somehow.

1a. Clutch slip
It was smooth enough for me to detect the first signs of clutch slip in fact, so I'm going to get a new clutch lined up asap.

2. "Naily"sounding rapid percussion note on acceleration...
I've noticed since it's service that it has a naily note coming from the engine bay when revving hard, sort of like a spitfire flying overhead during acceleration. Hard to know where its coming from but it also feels like there's a bit of corresponding feedback in the accelerator pedal when it happens. It phases in when I floor the accelerator pedal and remains for the main boost of acceleration, then fades out once the van catches up with the revs and reaches a higher speed, then its gone and I'm left with a lovely quiet and smooth engine again. Don't know if I should be worried about this, or if this is merely the sound of a 26 year old van engine doing its thing. I hadn't noticed it before the service, so I'm slightly concerned that it could be a timing thing, or a sticky piston or something.

3. Windows
As for my windows, I'm planning on taking a gentle chisel to the lumpy clumps of filler under the worst window in an attempt to cut it into something more closely resembling a window lip as opposed to a melted toblerone, and then fit my new window rubbers once I've had some temporary acrylic sheets cut for the windows. Its all good until I can get a better solution in place next year.

Problem 2 could be pinking?? I am however no expert but it sounds like it from what you are describing. I would be careful with it until further investigation has been carried out because it doesn't sound too good!

Tim,there's a camper on greedbay in your area that has a nice side panel. If the chassis welding on it is too bad to be repaired & it has to be scrapped.......

Wow that thing is about a mile away. I'm tempted to drive up there now and slap a spotter card on it just for the experience.

I've contacted the seller via my missus' ebay account (I don't use ebay) to ask if I can view it. To be honest its probably not going to be a good donor for my van as I'm in a 86 CF2 and though I have never viewed a CF in the flesh, from looking at pics I get the impression the side panels are a slightly different shape on a CF, more bulbous somehow than the CF2.

BUT, having said that... its going for £1 and there's no reserve to meet by the looks of it, so if the bids don't rise too much it looks like it could be a good purchase as spares for the club.

Nice numberplate too! Thanks very much for pointing it out. I'll let you know if I hear back from the seller.

I also have noticed the cf camper on ebay in Brighton, not being that far from me either.
If it is cheap enough as Tim says maybe worth the spares for club........
I dont mind chipping in or helping out pulling spares off ect........;]

Pretty neat, especially for a yorkie! If it does end up being scrapped that number would be worth a bit on its own.;]

Id chip in with that one too...

There are many good parts on it that would be criminal to scrap.

That interior is completely original Autosleeper - even down to the seats: they have been covered over with some kind of material, but in one photo the original vinyl and cloth is poking through.

the lifting roof doesnt look so bad either....

Plenty of room down here in Dorset to store all the bits....and it would only take a weekend with a few of us pulling together to strip it to a bare shell.

If we buy it, and strip it, we could probably weigh whats left in for scrap and get most of the 'investment' back.

Count me in for up to £100 guys...keep me posted

Carl

Hahaha, yes, I forgot to say that the cover alone makes it worth bidding.

I'm going to see if they get back to me offline/off-ebay as I don't have an ebay account. I'll then make them an offer, cash for removal. If I don't hear from them after a couple of days I guess I'll either have to break my ebay cherry and get an account, or beg my missus to allow me to bid via hers as usual.

I haven't bid on it because I don't use ebay and the missus wont let me bid for it on her account. I did email the seller though and they called back yesterday to say I could go and view it on Thursday... sadly there's no way I can get over there on Thursday because of work, and this weekend my missus is off to Germany for a long weekend leaving me holding the kids, so I wont be able to view it until next week. Shame really, as I'm free today!

I'll give them a call and see if there's any chance of getting over there this afternoon. This is more for the club than for me though... its of very little to me, being a CF1 (apart from that cover of course)

;D

Bad day for my Beddie today. I've been getting increasingly confident about manouvering my van through tight squeezes and after a couple of occasions where I squeezed her into an impossible car parking space in one of Brighton's car parks, I think confidence has slowly fermented into a heady brew of cockiness.

I was Christmas shopping today, and on my way home I decided to drop in at a garage near home that I think might be a good place to take my van to for future services. I just wanted to show them the van and see if they would be up for, and able to, service her.

As I got within twenty feet of the garage, the parcel delivery lorry in front stopped, almost blocking the narrow road. Driver jumped out, rolled up the shutter, took out a parcel and disappeared into a shop. I thought he wouldn't be long. Thing was, he had stopped me just feet away from the parking space I would have otherwise swung the Beddie into. After waiting 10 minutes for him to come and drive off, I decided I could easily pull round him and into the space, so I turned the wheel and moved forward.

I crunched the entire passenger side of my van, really badly, against the rubber bolster up the side of the van (a Luton type). Fortunately the damage was behind the passenger door, and fortunately the passenger side is the one that's already very bad, but one things for sure... its a lot worse now.

I had to come home, unscrew all the plywood lining, get a rounded brick from the garden and bash all the creases and crunks back out again.

All the external paint has cracked off though, and worse still is that underneath the paint, the panel looks to be coated in blackened rust. Inside, the panel is rust free though.

Was very gutted. Really cross at myself for my own cocky attitude when I could have just waited. The lorry driver was back inside two minutes of it happening. Stupid action, stupid fool, bad day for my van. I fear its getting worse under my jurisdiction, not better.

:C

I've got my new stainless steel exhaust from Adrian Bailey, my new brake lines, and a replacement clutch from Doctor Car Parts, ready to fit to my van.

Unfortunately I clicked the wrong flippin' button on Doctor Car Parts website, ordering clutch option 2/2 not 1/2, but I have to sing their praises highly because they have arranged to send me a replacement by courier on Friday and take back the wrong one for a very nominal fee. If the mistake had been theirs they wouldn't charge me at all, but it was completely mine so I felt I should pay something.

If anyone ever needs new clutch plates or an entire clutch assembly, I recommend Doctor Car Parts:
http://store.doctorcarparts.com/
0115 7149973
info@doctorcarparts.com
2 Carey Road Bulwell
Nottingham UK NG6 8AT

They can supply every type of clutch for every type of Bedford CF, as new items. Adrian Bailey also does a swapping system where you send him your worn clutch plates and (I assume) he sends you back some reconditioned ones. But for the cost of getting recon ones I personally felt it was worth spending £30 more on brand new ones. At least then I have the old ones on stand by for reconditioning next time... if there is a next time during my ownership.

So I just need to get these parts fitted, resolve my fuel pump issue (I'm 99.9% sure its my fuel pump causing sluggish uphill pull-aways), and then get my passenger side straightened out, and that will be stage 01 of my van's restoration. Mechanically sound, with bodywork primped up for the short term until I have the funds to commission a full shell restoration, zinc coating, and pro respray.

Last quote I got for that was 8k. Gulp!
