Started and running.

Hi to all,

Today was the first time to have the tractor running long enough to do some carburettor tuning and set the timing while the engine was running at tick-over so well pleased with that, maybe now I will get it on the move and round to the workshop door.
The air filter arrived this morning so that has helped a lot but still waiting for the paint I ordered and that should have got here today, I should be able to pick up a throttle cable at the Scone rally.
Still a lot of rust to remove and the tracks to free off before it will be fit for use but I am getting there slowly!

Progress.

Hi to all,

Managed to get the choke cable and carb jet to work as they should and got a throttle cable made up and fitted, cured the carb adapter plate leak with a rubber flange gasket so I now have all the controls working so it is now time to take a look at the tracks and mainly the drive wheel rollers some of them are still seized.

Tickover problems.

Hi to all,

To over come the noise heavy problem I have decided to bring the tractor into the rear of the house through the next door garden with their permission of cause, that way there will be less of a drop.
But the problem at the moment is getting the tick-over slow enough to engage the gears, starting and running but too fast for the centrifugal clutch.
It has to be a very slow tick-over to allow the gears to engage cleanly,
but on the plus side I now have a coil and magneto system in place and working
the last time I seen that set up was on an old 1927 Rolls Royce.

Gear selection.

Hi to all,

The gear selection is still proving to be a problem due to high tick-over and to slow down the engine leads to stalling, getting the fuel flow just right so that there is just enough getting through to prevent stalling but not as much as increase the engine speed is proving to be quite tricky.
Had to invent a means of reducing the movement on the exhaust pipe because it was being shaken loose so a made up and a welded bracket to be fitted, I was unable to find a throttle lever at Scone rally so I will have to make something up for that meantime.
The change in the weather this week means I have had to cover the tractor with a tarp and tie it down, which also means it stops the passing rubbish throwers from using it as a bin.

Find the plough.

Hi to all,

After I collected the tractor the man phoned me to say you did not take the plough, my reply was I never seen one in the marsh-land and he has now told me that was because it was in what he calls his garden.
So that is the mission this weekend to go back and try to dig out this plough which fits the tractor and increases its value quite a bit in the world of vintage farm machinery.
And the good thing is it is all included in the price paid, so if I can manage to get it out and loaded into a trailer it will add to my collection!

A brake band device.

Hi to all,

The idea being to slow down the outer drum of the centrifugal clutch which spins too fast at tick-over to allow the gears to engage cleanly, a brake band made of machine driving belt should be tough enough to act
as a brake.
Having lost the throttle lever in the shed somewhere I have had to make up a temp. lever which I got fitted yesterday and it does the job for now.
Exhaust repair seems to have been a success now running much quieter, vibration being greatly reduced.
The US carburettor mixture is now just about right and works as good as it did on the Morris 1000 engine it came off of, so pleased with that!

Back to the drawing board.

Hi to all,

The brake band idea did not work but I have got the tick-over down a bit through carb. adjustment and adjustment of the timing, (no timing marks) so nothing to guide you but it is now very close to the right position with less valve popping at tick-over.
There was on valve popping at revs which indicates that as the timing advanced with engine speed, too far in retard at tick-over.

The last of the bits collected.

Hi to all,

Yesterday we managed to get the plough and the grubber collected and brought to my back yard, both need a lot of work to get them back to a useable state having been left to sink and rot in the mud.
But once stripped down they will be good inside work through out the winter months, they will add to the valve of the tractor in agricultural terms at rallies or as a working piece of farming history.

Jacks and stands.

Hi to all,

Today I was able to get the tractor up off the ground onto axle stands and blocks so that the tracks could be turned by hand and the rollers coated in grease, the next step will be to get it started with the tracks able to run free clear of the ground to help things slacken off and shake out some of that hard marsh-land clay.
Then I can get the oil drained off the engine while it is nice and hot and leave it to drain down over night, by what I can see it is very gungy stuff and has been in there a long time.

Chipping away the rust.

Hi to all,

Started to try and salvage the grubber today which was well buried deep in the marsh we almost gave up trying to get it out, every nut and bolt is seized so used a lot of WD40 and waste oil a hammer chisel and a long socket bar with some success.
Leaving it all to soak in over night and hope to get some more movement in the bolts holding it all together tomorrow, it will be a very useful addition to the showing of the tractor in the future once it is all cleaned up and painted.

Grubbers and tracks..

Hi to all,

To start the day I managed to get all the grubbing teeth off of the frame still more to be done but many of the bolts are still soaking in the hope that they will free off in time.
With the tractor up on stands I managed to get the engine oil changed and the filter cleaned and refilled with correct grade of oil, next was the tracks and after running them in gear to help free them off I set about trying to unbolt the very seized bolts.
One broke and then the other and the track uncoiled with some force (mainly because they were a bit over tensioned) and the adjusters were seized, I will have go at freeing them off tomorrow after a night of soaking they just might move.
It did allow me a better access to the rollers on the driving wheels to try and free them off but most of them will have to be replaced due to damage and ware.
There are sixteen bolts and rollers on each of the two driving wheels and each track has sixty bolts to be replaced so a long slow job ahead.
The trailing wheels are the ones with the adjustment that is tomorrows main job
if the weather allows.

Track adjueters.

Hi to all,

The track adjusters underneath the tractor could only be reached using an old box spanner which was too short to be turned from outside the chassis so an old broken socket had to be welded into the end of the box spanner so that a ratchet could be used to crack loose the rusted up adjustment nuts.
Next was the job of repairing the track that I removed after two of the bolt broke firing a support plate and a rubber distance piece off into the hedge of next door garden, never to be seen again!
A replacement rubber and support plate has been made and new bolts hold the track back together but in time I think all the bolts on both tracks will have to be replaced.
My next job will be to cut away the carrier bolts for the drive wheel rollers as most of them are very worn mainly caused by lack of lubrication and of cause five years sunk into a marsh-land did not help.

The strength of rust.

Hi to all,

Today was nut cracking day after several days of soaking I managed to crack free all but one of the seized nuts that would allow me to safely remove the other set of tracks and gain access to repair the rollers on the driving wheels.
The good thing about these older tractor is that they were build for the farmer with access to a limited number of tools adjustable stilsens and hammers with good access to most nuts and bolts all of which are BSF sizes.
But I did find the throttle lever that I had miss placed so that is now fitted but a wet morning turned into a wet afternoon so I decided to stop and get dried off.

On the right track.

Hi to all,

I now have both tracks off and dragged around to the shed door where I can start the long job of cutting off each set of bolt holding each section of the track together, all 120 of them to be replaced.
With the tracks off I can now get access to the rollers and see which ones can be reused and which ones need to be replaced, so a lot of cutting and welding to be done to put them right and fit for service.
The track adjustment slides which allow the tracks to be set out at a wider setting are still seized so I have soaked all the moving parts in the hope that they will free off.

The costs up to date.

Hi to all,

Bought the bolts to renovate the tracks yesterday which £52.56 the paint cost £32.00 a choke and throttle cable at £24.00, engine and gear-oil at £30.00.
And I need to free off and renovate the driving wheel roller and pins before the tracks can go back on, which will take some time with having to cut off all the old bolts.
But so far it has not been too expensive at a £128.56 plus the cost by buying the tractor £450.00, the only other out-lay is my time and I have the rest of the winter to get the work done.

On the right track.

Hi to all,

Today I managed to finish renovating One of the tracks off the old Ransome tractor that has taken three days in all, cutting off each track section to check the rubber flexible inserts and replace the bolts using ny-lock nuts.
But the change in flexibility is amazing and just shows how seized and badly corroded the bolts and joints were, tomorrow I can make a start on the other track.
Then after that I will have to see what can be done about the seized driving wheel rollers and pins, before the tracks can go back into place.

Today's agenda.

Hi to all,

Back to the grinder hammer and chisel only another fifty two left to cut off track number two and the job will done, and I managed to get the red paint I need for the wheels and side plates, good paint but limited in colour range!
Breaking down the tracks into sections of four so that they will fit into the vice and that makes them easier to handle, the new bolts have to be left slack so that refitting is made easier and the track is flexible.
