Fuel

Has anyone you know of used/come across these?

If so are they any better than putting additives in to unleaded petrol?
They seem too good to be true. especially when you are looking at £5 of additive every time you fill up. The firm selling them says thay will last for 100,000 miles.

I had a Broquet one in my SAAB 96 & currently have one in my Moto Morini. Seems to do the trick, but only time will tell.

The heads are coming off the Morini in the New Year, so I'll know for sure then.

HI,

£5 of additive each time you fill up is rather a lot. I put a Bardahl additive in 95 unleaded, and it costs 20 euros for 500ml, to treat 500 litres, so that makes it 2 euros or so for a full tank treated.

Thanks chaps.
I've ordered on and will see how it goes.

I took the filter out of the fuel pump toady and saw that it was full of, what can only be described with a swear word. I think an inline filter will be purchased soon.

My opinion - wouldn't touch one with a 100 ft long barge pole!
Basically you a relying on the HOPE that the lead will slowly dissolve into the petrol in the tank and dissolve at the right amount to correspond with the speed/distance that you are driving. Did you have a google on these things?

Austin Healey Club
So-called fuel catalyst pellets (often tin based) can be installed in the fuel tank or in-line feeding the carbs. Rely on them at your peril. They're inert and won't do harm, but neither will they provide any protection.

MG TA,TB &TC owners club
Metallic lead, or any other metal does not raise octane numbers or stop pre-ignition, thus giving the lie to miscellaneous silly ideas involving lead shot in the fuel tank or tin pellets in the fuel line.

There are lots of other owners clubs comments out there that basically say that you may as well believe in fairies

The life of your head with unleaded relies a lot on the way you drive. My head didn't last long but I drove my CF hard. High speed (well, as high as a CF will go ) on motorways and hard driving will shorten the head life. Driving gently will, even without any additive, mean a longer life.

Hello Finn,
You wouldn't be the proud owner of a three and a half would you? (sorry I couldn't do it in numbers, haven't got it on the keyboard).

Hello Rob,
I have just taken the cat off my van as I permanently run on LPG. The previous owner swore by it. In my experience, the people that use them swear by them and the people that don't swear about them
Having said that, it only works on petrol: I use a FlashLube for the LPG.

Total waste of money.

Some time ago Practical Motorist did a test on theses type of metal bits and found that they did not do anything at all.

If your determined to try somethin out then why not cut up some old lead flashing into 2"x1" strips rolled up and place then in your tank.

To determine how petrol dissolves lead put a piece 1"x1" into a jam jar and then 3/4 fill the jar with clean fresh petrol.
seal with the lid and place on a shelf out of any heat or sunshine.

Then once a week have a look at it with out disturbing the jar to see what is happening, you will be surprised by how long it last......

Hello Gethin,
I have no opinion on this matter whatsoever but think about what water does to lead, how it erodes water pipes; that's why they changed lead pipes to plastic and in areas that used lead pipes they recommended that you let the water run for three minutes in the morning before you drunk it.

The big problem is lead oxide which coats the surface and makes the surface inert (ish). Try this: get a lump of lead anhd shave a surface off it. It will be bright and shiny. The next day it will be dull due to oxidisation. Chucking a lump of lead in your tank only serves to react with the most volatile compound in there. In effect, it eats the part of the fuel which provides gogo juice rather than lubricating the engine!
My mate is a chemist. He agrees with me because I can shout louder and hes mechanically incompetent. Im just incompetent.
If you want to argue with that logic, then think theres alot of folk out there trying to turn into money. This bloke is a bull merchant.

Nope, a 500 Sport.

These threads are funny. They always go exactly the same way.
